Nonprofit organizations provide many of the services that improve the quality of life in San Mateo County, while also employing a local work force and contributing to the local economy. San Mateo County nonprofit organizations providing programs and services in education, the arts, social services, animal welfare, and environmental stewardship employed more than 2,400 county residents and reported more than $870 million in gross receipts in 2003, according to the Center for Charitable Statistics. Unlike for-profit businesses that are focused first and foremost on generating profits for owners or shareholders, nonprofits operate for the benefit of the general public and often are the most cost effective providers of goods and services for the community.
