Boys & Girls Clubs of North San Mateo County – Senior Director of Programs

BGCNSMC is currently seeking an exceptional and dynamic leader as the Senior Director of Programs reporting to the CEO. The Senior Director of Program’s primary responsibilities will overall program operations, which include: oversight of program design, delivery, strategy and expansion, organizational leadership, program staff management (i.e., coaching, professional development, and training), and consistent monitoring of after-school and out of school programs at multiple community and school sites.

As the Senior Director of Programs you will lead the program team to design, implement, assess, evaluate, and improve all aspects of the program. As such, you will be responsible for developing an exceptional team, managing and being accountable for program strategy and outcomes, and investing and inspiring stakeholders internally and externally. The Senior Director of Programs will be an innovative and collaborative leader who naturally and proactively challenges the assumed status quo for our members and leads the program team to marshal the resources and supports are in place to ensure all our members succeed.

For the last 65 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of North San Mateo County (BGCNSMC) has been a community pillar and a positive, driving force for youth academic empowerment and leadership. BGNSMC is a dynamic and responsive nonprofit organization in North San Mateo County.

We partner with schools and the community to ensure that youth of our community are provided with the opportunities, experiences, and support to redefine possibilities, and chart courses to great futures. We serve 3,000 youth at five sites throughout Pacifica and South San Francisco. BGCNSMC reinforces and enhances the skills and knowledge young people learn at school. We create opportunities for high-yield learning and literacy activities. Our programs are designed to ensure that all Club members graduate from high school on time, ready for a post-secondary education, and a 21st-century career.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Vision and Strategy

  • Develop, implement, and inspire a shared program vision and strategy aligned with the organization’s mission and goals. This will include setting programmatic goals, measures of success, and the operating plan to achieve program goals

  • Cultivate the program team to identify, implement, and codify innovative strategies to ensure all our students members academic success and graduate from high school prepared for professional success

  • Ensure that site leadership has the support and resources to implement high quality programs with fidelity

Organizational Leadership

  • Work with the CEO to develop a plan for building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders in the Bay Area community

  • Serve as a primary liaison with the school communities and partners

  • Support the CEO with ongoing overall management of BGCNSMC’s program operations

  • Provide ongoing overall management of BGCNSMC’s program budget

  • Attract, engage, develop, and retain exceptional program staff that meet and exceed their goals

  • Enable program team members to do their best work by removing barriers, encouraging collaboration across the team, and inspiring a shared sense of ownership for program quality and results

  • Invest, inspire and engage stakeholders (members, parents, teachers, and community partners) to gain their trust, confidence, and commitment to the program

  • Partner with the senior leadership team to elevate organizational trends and proactively provide solutions to continuously improve the program

  • Work with colleagues across the BGCA national network to share information, resources, and collaborate on national effort and local implementation

  • Attract, engage, and deploy program volunteers.

  • Attend donor and partner meetings as needed

  • Ensure that marketing and fund development initiatives are carried out in keeping with the organization’s values, mission, vision and plans

  • Travel to off-site meetings, trainings, and events

Management

  • Oversight of the program team through the direct supervision of Area and Site Directors, and works with them to co-design, establish, implement, measure, and review program systems and logistics

  • Build a data-driven culture and team dynamics across all sites and aspects of program and staff development

  • Implement thoughtful and robust recruitment, on-boarding and ongoing training and staff development program

  • Sustain effective program planning throughout the year that includes session planning, curriculum development, program goals, objectives, measurable outcomes, evaluation, and reporting

  • Manage activities across the program continuum, and establish policies and procedures to maximize effectiveness and efficiency

  • Meet or exceed strategic goals around Membership, Average Daily Attendance (ADA), Registered Teens, and other Youth Served goals

  • Lead program evaluation processes to assess the strengths of the program, identify areas for improvement, and prioritize and implement programmatic improvements

  • Develop and manage the program budget including monitoring monthly cash flow, anticipating variances, and elevating resource needs to the senior leadership team

  • Ensure all program leadership and their teams (primarily frontline staff that coordinate/implement daily programs), engage in effective program planning, management, and implement documented, engaging lesson plans

  • Collaborate with development office and senior leadership team to share the qualitative and quantitative data to strategically message outcomes and achievements to external stakeholders and raise money to support Club programs.

  • Identify and evaluate the risks associated with program activities and take proactive steps to mitigate them.

  • Collaborate with the Finance team and Area/Site Directors to develop program budgets reflective of annual program goals and objectives, and in alignment with grant deliverables.

QUALIFICATIONS, PROVEN SKILLS, AND MINDSET

  • Exceptional people leader capable of developing and empowering 3-4 direct reports, and managing a large team through layers

  • Demonstrate the ability to lead, coach, and train program staff to accomplish established objectives

  • Demonstrate strong organization, tracking, and follow-through skills

  • Able to work autonomously; successful with minimal oversight

  • High level of professionalism and willingness to do "whatever it takes" to reach ambitious goals

  • Sound discernment and judgment with the ability to move work forward independently

  • Excellent relationship-building and collaboration skills, superb organizational skills and attention to detail, the ability to juggle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, and a commitment to the mission of BGCNSMC.

  • Proven ability to use quantitative and qualitative methods to measure program effectiveness and leverage data to drive strategy.

  • Experience working in and with elementary and middle schools.

  • Experience managing multiple sites and programs that serve hundreds of youth

  • Clear background check and history indicating fitness to work with children.

  • Bachelor’s degree is required. Equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the successful performance of the essential job duties will be considered.

  • CPR and First Aid Certification (to be arranged if not current).

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • A minimum of 10 years of professional experience including no less than 5 years managing a diverse, multi-age teams with demonstrated responsibility for programmatic outcomes and budgets

  • Progressive experience working in a leadership or supervisory capacity in specifically coaching and developing youth development staff in a school or community outreach setting

  • Experience developing and applying tools and methods to evaluate program success

  • Must be energetic, youth-focused, and proactive, with a passion for providing high quality programming to youth

  • Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Donor Perfect, and comfort learning new systems

  • Working knowledge/advanced grasp of budget development and grants management

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

  • An understanding of the local non-profit, education landscape in the Bay Area

  • Experience working with Vision/Management Tracking System or other membership-based technology in a relevant setting

  • Former experience in a Boys & Girls Club (or other youth development organization) programmatic leadership role

  • A graduate degree in a related field and/or content expertise.
