Mental Health Association of San Mateo County – Social Recreation Coordinator

The Mental Health Association of San Mateo County (MHA), a nonprofit organization, enriches quality of life, restores dignity, and reduces homelessness, particularly for those afflicted by mental illness.

MHA strengthens hope by providing shelter, support and opportunities for socialization. The Mental Health Association of San Mateo County has operated Friendship Center programs since 1970 to provide social, recreational and educational activities, and outings for adults in the mental health system.

General Agency Expectations

Treat all program participants with empathy, dignity, and respect. Develop and maintain good working relationships with all MHA employees. Become familiar with other agencies and service providers in the county to develop good working relationships to provide clients with the support they need. Inform supervisor of daily schedule. Participate in staff meetings. Participate in ongoing quality improvement activities. Provide supervisor with all necessary information in a timely manner. Comply with all program and agency policies and guidelines when serving clients.

Major responsibilities include

In collaboration with Friendship Center Coordinator: plan social, recreational, and educational activities. Plan, create, and mail monthly calendar of activities. Obtain supplies, organize group outings, and organize holiday parties. Recruit, train, and support community volunteers and student interns. Assist in planning and implementing quarterly volunteer meetings. Personal qualities include outgoing personality, ability to take initiative, sense of humor, flexibility, strong listening and communication skills, skills in organizing small and large group activities, time management skills, budgeting skills and ability to maintain accurate records.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with individuals living with mental health

  • Ability to pass a background check

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Proficient computer skills

  • Knowledge of the Peninsula Area and surrounding areas

  • Reliable transportation

  • Valid California driver’s license, insured vehicle and clean driving record

  • Spanish speaking preferred, but not required

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)

  • Associates or Bachelors (preferred)

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift upwards of 10 pounds
Schedule: 32-40 hours per week depending on availability. Some weekends may be required.
Location: Multiple locations throughout San Mateo County
Benefits: Full Medical, Dental and Vision coverage. Optional 403b buy in available.
Job Type: Full-time
Salary: $17.00 to $18.00 /hour
