Reporting to San Mateo County Community Colleges Foundation’s (the Foundation’s) Executive Director, the Foundation Development Director is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and implementing contributed income programs, including major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, special events, and faculty and staff giving for the benefit of scholarships and special programs at the San Mateo County Community College District’s (SMCCCD’s) three colleges (Skyline College, Cañada College, and College of San Mateo). Public contact is extensive and involves faculty, staff, businesses, SMCCCD Trustees, Foundation Board members, and donors with the goal of advancing the Foundation’s mission and services. The Development Director will create compelling opportunities for donors to support the Foundation’s mission and to make the experience of giving satisfying and rewarding. The successful candidate has the ability to work with a high degree of independence, sound judgement, teamwork, and initiative.

The Foundation seeks a Development Director who is poised to make a meaningful impact on the trajectory of the Foundation and student success at SMCCCD. The Development Director will play a meaningful role as the Foundation embarks on strategic planning with the likelihood of a comprehensive campaign to increase our average scholarship award amount for our students most in need of financial support to help them stay in college and accomplish their academic goals.

The College and the District

San Mateo County Community College District is home to Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College. All three of our colleges have been designated as Hispanic Serving Institutions. The District enrolls approximately 23,000 students, the majority of whom are from minoritized populations. Of the students within the District, 2.8% are African-American, 0.2% are American Indian, 16.4% are Asian, 10.4% are Filipino, 24.6% are Latinx, 1.6% are Pacific Islander, 24.0% are White, 17.8% Multi-Ethnic, and 2.2% are unknown.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position.   1. Plan, direct, and implement the Foundation’s fundraising campaigns and activities, including: Annual Giving, Faculty and Staff Giving, Special Events, and Planned Giving Program

  2. Expand the Foundation’s fundraising program. Generate new and increase current revenue by identifying and cultivating prospective donors and by developing and implementing strategies to increase current giving levels

  3. Lead major gift efforts by developing and maintaining relationships with major donors. Steward regional major gifts and ensure donors are informed of the effects of their generosity

  4. Manage and grow the Chancellor’s Circle. Duties include: maintaining current base of Chancellor’s Circle members, increasing current member giving levels, and identifying, cultivating, and soliciting additional members.

  5. Collaborate with the Board of Directors and Executive Director on the creation of a tactical fund development plan to support the strategic direction of the Foundation

  6. Create opportunities for the Foundation Board members to engage in fundraising. Effectively engage and partner with Foundation Board members in the fundraising process

  7. Stay apprised of advancements and changes pertinent to raising money, to the Foundation’s mission, and to the development profession. Direct and lead adaptations to current strategies and practices in accordance with these changes and as necessary

  8. Develop and gain approval for annual income and expenditure budget for fund development

  9. Supervise the Foundation’s Development Manager

  10. Forecast and evaluate the potential of fundraising campaigns and activities

  11. Prepare regular reports for presentation to staff, Board of Directors, and others, including regular communications to the Board of Directors regarding fundraising strategies and activities

  12. Direct and implement gift recognition programs

  13. Recruit and train volunteer fundraising leadership

  14. Develop, train, mentor, and partner with the Foundation’s Alumni Relations & Development Manager on alumni giving strategies, including integrating alumni giving into the Annual Campaign for Student Success

  15. Provide guidance and support to ongoing or new college-level grassroots fundraising activities

  16. Coordinate and collaborate with college faculty and staff and other appropriate individuals when a college program is identified that could benefit from private support. Work in partnership with SMCCCD college faculty and staff as necessary for the mutual benefit of the college and donor’s philanthropic goal

  17. Serve as a contributing writer for Foundation publications, social media, and website

  18. Actively support major gift campaigns conducted by the colleges, District, and Foundation

  19. Use a database (Raiser’s Edge), and a variety of computer software applications to prepare reports, correspondence, and other materials

  20. Research a variety of donor demographic, statistical, financial, and other data for reporting and planning purposes

  21. Establish contacts and network with local businesses and corporations

  22. Some weekend and evening duties

  23. Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field

  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff

  • 4+ years in a lead development role at a nonprofit organization

  • Demonstrated success and experience in development, including major gifts and campaigns (fundraising from multiple donor channels)

  • Experience in planning, leading, and managing development projects, including coordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes, and tracking and reporting on progress to senior managers/board of directors

  • Advanced written and oral communication skills

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Proven success in development for medium to large nonprofits

  2. Experience running campaigns and success fundraising from multiple donor channels

Physical Requirements

This classification requires dexterity of hands and fingers to type, mouse, and use phone; sitting for extended periods of time; ability to exert 10 to 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects weighing 35 pounds or less; work at a computer, including repetitive use of computer keyboard and mouse; sitting and viewing a computer monitor for prolonged lengths of time; vision to read printed material and computer monitor; intermittent standing, walking, bending, and stooping; hearing and speaking to communicate and provide information to others; and ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct Foundation business.


Benefits include paid holidays, vacation and sick leave. The District pays all or a portion of monthly medical plan premiums (depending on the coverage) and pays all of the monthly dental and vision plan premiums for employees and eligible dependents. Additional paid benefits include life insurance, salary continuance insurance, and an Employee Assistance Program. Classified employees participate in the Public Employees’ Retirement System, a defined-benefit retirement plan through the State of California. Optional tax-deferred 403(b) and 457 retirement plans are also available.
