Sisters of Mercy – Food Service Worker

Sisters of Mercy is seeking a FT Food Service Worker to join the dietary team. The position is located in Burlingame, CA and will include a full benefit package. Performs a variety of kitchen duties as assigned in the preparation and serving of meals to Residents and guests. Follows established hand-washing procedures. At all times, follows kitchen safety guidelines and sanitary food preparation restrictions according to department and facility guidelines. Demonstrates respectful treatment of the dignity, privacy, and individuality of Residents, guests, and co-workers. Incorporates an understanding of Mercy mission and values into work performance.

  • Responsible for reviewing all information posted on the board regarding campus wide events. Must coordinate “in advance” with other co-workers to ensure each event, retreat, meal service, etc. is organized and runs smoothly

  • Monitors all service lines during meal service, and informs cooks if food items need replenishing.

  • Responsible for the delivery, set-up, service and sanitation of all dining rooms and food service areas of the campus and special functions. Breaks down service line after meals.

  • Responsible for assisting with proper storage of food deliveries.

  • Delivers, set‑up and breakdown for special functions and/or catering needs.

  • Performs sanitation assignments per sanitation guidelines.

  • Responsible for assisting Cooks with food preparation as instructed.

  • Follows safety regulations and precautions at all times.

  • Follows established Infection Control and Universal Precautions policies and procedures when performing daily tasks.

  • Operation of equipment associated with food service preparation and cleaning.

  • Communicate with coworkers, residents, and guests in a respectful and courteous manner.

  • Reports all accidents/incidents to supervisor on the shift in which they occur.

  • Closes and locks windows and doors at the end of the day and also responsible for turning off all equipment and lights before leaving.

  • Ensures that equipment, tools and supplies are washed, rinsed and sanitized and properly stored at all times.

  • Follows established fire safety policies and procedures.

  • Wears and/or uses safety equipment and supplies (e.g., gloves, face masks, back brace, dollies, etc.) when lifting or moving heavy objects.

  • Ensures that assigned work areas are maintained in a clean, safe, comfortable, and attractive manner.

  • Follows proper techniques when mixing chemicals, disinfectants, and solutions used for cleaning. Refers to established instructions or manufacturer’s instructions when necessary.

  • Reports all hazardous conditions or equipment to supervisor.

  • Follows established hand-washing procedures.



  • At least two years of experience working in food service operations and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must have or obtain a valid Food Handler’s Card.

  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule that may include some evening and weekend shifts.

  • Position requires sound communication skills and use of the English language in order to communicate with staff and Residents.

  • Preferred:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

Physical Requirements:

  • Works almost constantly in a standing position.

  • Frequent walking, bending, stooping, and lifting of dish racks, bus tubs, trays of food, and other objects up to 30 pounds.

  • Must have ability to operate kitchen equipment as needed.

  • Sufficient manual dexterity to safely handle dishes and kitchen equipment.

  • Will be working in Resident Dining Room; therefore, this individual must be able to maintain a clean, neat appearance.

  • Works in a relatively confined kitchen and dining room area which may become quite warm.

  • Frequent exposure of hands to water, cleaners, and disinfectants.

Visual/Audible Acuity Requirements:

  • Must be able to read and distinguish small print.

  • Must have depth perception and be able to distinguish basic colors.

  • Must be able to distinguish normal sounds with some background noise.

  • Must be able to speak clearly and make self-understood while also understanding others using the English language.
