Petition to Expand Eviction Moratorium

The People’s Alliance of San Mateo County:

As the end date for the county’s eviction moratorium approaches, thousands of families are at severe risk of being forced from their homes.  We need very urgently to join together to prevent the massive harm that would result from this.

The People’s Alliance of San Mateo County has prepared a petition to be presented to the Board of Supervisors for San Mateo County.  This petition describes the looming threat and sets forth three proposals to prevent the human injury associated with it.  These proposals draw on measures that have been adopted by other counties that are confronting a similar eviction threat.

The 3 Proposals of this petition are:

1. Take eviction off the table, as Alameda and Solano counties have done. Specify that landlords may pursue unpaid rent from the period of the moratorium through civil debt actions only.
2. Give renters more time. Allow renters 12 months after the moratorium ends to make up back rent, as Alameda and Los Angeles counties have done.
3. Create more resources for rental assistance to keep families from emerging from this period with crippling amounts of debt.

The goal is to gather as many signatures as possible by Friday, July 24.
