With our planet disrupted by crisis, local sustainability leaders are resetting programs and rethinking results. Across government, nonprofit, business & youth, local environmental organizations are seeking to lock in smaller footprints and lower emissions.

Join us to hear how these leaders envision more sustainable post-pandemic living:

After the presentations, participate in a community discussion on viable cross-sector collaboration to extend the environmental benefits of SIP, including viewpoints from Supervisor Pine.

  • Update on Thrive E&S Community impact group – Reduce & Rethink Single Use Plastics in SMC

Roisin McElarney, President Citizens’ Climate Lobby - Aragon HS Youth Chapter

Roisin McElarney has been the president of the Aragon High School Youth Chapter of Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL) since May 2017. She’s currently in the Class of 2021 at Aragon.

Dave Pine, San Mateo County Board of Supervisors

Dave Pine is a member of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, and represents Supervisorial District 1, which includes the eastern two-thirds of South San Francisco and all of San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame, and Hillsborough. He was elected on May 3, 2011 in an all-mail-ballot special election that was held to fill the vacancy created when Supervisor Mark Church resigned to become Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder. Pine had been a school board member before being elected Supervisor, serving on the Burlingame School District Board of Trustees from 2003 to 2006 and on the San Mateo Union High School District Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2011. Before entering politics, Pine was a lawyer for three Silicon Valley tech companies: Radius, Excite@Home, and Handspring.

Emma Shlaes, Director of Policy & Advocacy for Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition

Emma Shlaes has worked at SVBC since 2013, starting as Advocacy Coordinator, and was promoted to Deputy Director in late 2019. She oversees the advocacy and programs team in both counties and works on regional policy issues, including Caltrain and BART bike parking and access. Emma has a dual master’s degree in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development from American University and the UN-Mandated University for Peace where she completed several projects on bicycling at the local and global levels. She has previously worked on national campaigns ranging from diesel pollution to transportation funding at Clean Water Action and Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. She also spent a summer researching the auto-rickshaw industry in Mumbai with EMBARQ India.

Lauren Weston, Executive Director of Acterra

Lauren Weston has over a decade of leadership experience in several well-regarded nonprofits including the Breakthrough Collaborative and the Hiller Aviation Museum. Most recently, she was Director of Philanthropy for the West Coast Region at World Bicycle Relief. Originally from Northern California, Lauren is an alumna of New York University, where she received her master’s degree, and holds a bachelor’s from the University of California–Davis.
