Homework Central is seeking an Interim Executive Director to guide the organization through the end of the ’25- '26 school year, and to help set up Homework Central for success in the next school year and beyond. If the Interim ED would like to be considered for the permanent role of ED, they would be included in HWC’s search this spring.
About Homework Central:
Homework Central (“HWC”) is an educational non-profit located in the city of San Mateo. We provide after-school tutoring and support to elementary school students. Our mission is to empower students facing structural inequities through academic assistance, family engagement, and community resources. We serve 125 students on four campuses in the San Mateo Foster City School District, three hours daily, Monday through Friday. In 2025 HWC celebrated its 27 th year of operation.
Responsibilities
Oversee day-to-day operations and administration of organization.
Ensure timelines/deliverables are met for key goals for remainder of school year.
Ensure funds are spent appropriately, that HWC is meeting budget, and that bookkeeper has information required for monthly accounting close.
Provide staff oversight and support senior staff on achieving goals and priorities
Support HR duties as needed, including compliance where necessary with regulations for educational and non-profit organizations.
Improve internal processes and systems as needed.
Provide oversight and support on fundraising efforts, in collaboration with Fund Development Committee, including annual fundraising event on April 25.
Serve as a key point of contact, along with senior staff and some board members, on behalf of HWC with outside organizations, including the San Mateo-Foster City School District (SMFCSD) and community partners.
Support senior staff and some board members in the annual renegotiation of MOU with SMFCSD.
Prepare and distribute monthly report to Board and participate in monthly Board meetings.
Work with graphic designer to update website as needed, and to support publication of a quarterly HWC Newsletter.
Qualifications
Background and experience with non-profit, school or small business management.
Communication skills, essential as primary point of contact for and connector of stakeholders.
Administrative and compliance experience for small organization / business: Google Workspace, Quickbooks, ADP, digital marketing and fundraising platforms, etc.
Team player and people manager, familiarity with HR basics, and experience managing external contractors (bookkeeper, IT administrator, graphic designer, et al).
Professional educational experience nice to have, and/or volunteering in elementary schools.
Fundraising expertise and experience nice to have, especially with organizing fundraising events.
Compensation
Twenty to thirty hours per week. 1099 contract position. Hourly pay.
