Youth Leadership Institute: Program Coordinator, San Mateo County - Friday Night Live

The Youth Leadership Institute is seeking a Program Coordinator (PC) for San Mateo County's Friday Night Live initiative. The PC will collaborate with youth aged 12 to 24 to empower them and mobilize their communities for meaningful improvements in San Mateo County and across California. Responsibilities include training youth leaders to enhance their political awareness, assessing health and well-being issues, fostering community relationships, and driving local campaigns for long-term systemic changes. The PC will manage logistics for campaigns, ensuring culturally relevant leadership opportunities, and lead the Friday Night Live substance prevention programming at Half Moon Bay High School while supporting the development of a holistic youth center. Additional tasks involve delivering educational curricula, developing youth leadership activities, providing parent education and community outreach, and implementing social norms campaigns. The PC will also serve as a liaison between school and community leaders in the Bay Area and Sacramento region.

In addition to serving 7 California counties, yli provides customized trainings, consulting, evaluation, and technical assistance services nationally. 

Responsibilities

  • Recruitment, Outreach, and Promotion

    1. Sustain recruitment to ensure diverse youth membership in the campaigns

    2. Conduct outreach to recruit and attract dynamic and diverse team of youth leaders and adult leaders

    3. Ensure balanced, demographically diverse groups of youth and adults

    4. Produce appealing and relevant materials, and outreach materials

    5. Attend several different coalition meetings and set up a network

    High-Quality Relationships with Youth and Adult Participants

    1. Utilize positive youth development and youth-adult partnership principles to guide the work

    2. Represent YLI to networks and community in professional way

    3. Develop relationships with local leaders and decision makers

    4. Attend local government meetings and events when needed

    5. Hold 1:1s with youth

    Program Leadership and Logistical Functions

    1. Using yli curriculum, plan for and deliver developmentally appropriate and engaging workshops and training that build leadership and organizing skills, deepen issue and community knowledge, and strengthen connections among members, as well as spark transformation that leads to impactful advocacy

    2. Supervise and mentor youth leaders to develop and implement youth-led campaigns that offer multiple youth leadership development opportunities 

    3. Plan and arrange meetings and events, including: preparing sites, agendas, and materials

    4. Conduct strategic follow-up activities after meetings and events including: preparation and distribution of minutes and other records, carrying out tasks assigned at the meeting 

    5. Align program curriculum with the different and innovative aspects of media

    Management and Oversight of Campaign Development and Implementation

    1. Manage coordination of media and press coverage for campaigns as necessary

    2. Employ social media tools as a method to organize youth base

    3. Develop the capacity of youth and adults to facilitate youth-led community level data gathering and analysis in support of campaign actions

    4. Manage coordination of key campaign events, like rallies, assemblies, press conferences or legislative hearings as needed

    5. Secure support of campaigns by key stakeholders including school administrators, teachers, parents, community members, policy leaders and other youth groups 

    6. Maintain and regularly update a database of allies, constituents, and opponents for use during mobilization and regular communication with campaign supporters

    7. Contribute to development of internship programs

    8. Attend City Council and County Board of Supervisor meetings as needed during campaigns.

    Reporting and Record Keeping

    1. Keep accurate, current records of participant demographics

    2. Maintain event summary and monthly records of activities

    3. Document the timely completion of contractual goals and objectives, including internal and external reports

    4. Maintain supervision logs and track youth and staff progress towards goals

    5. Produce regular reports as required by funders

    6. Create content that are educational leaflets for recruitment

    Stay informed about local issues, trends, and opportunities in the field

    1. Scan local and state list serves and websites 

    2. Track local policy related to projects 

    3. Bring issues and opportunities to the attention of supervisors and share knowledge and resources with staff 

Qualifications

  • 2-3 years relevant experience in the field of youth development, and/or a B.A.

  • Commitment to social justice, public health, and community organizing as strategies to affect change

  • Experience facilitating youth-driven campaigns or projects

  • Experience with social media and media relations

  • Demonstrated capacity to work with youth and adults from communities of color and low-income communities

  • Significant experience in project management

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills

  • Excellent follow-through skills; detail-oriented, organized, professional

  • Experience with community based research or assessment

  • Able to work some evenings and weekends

  • Able to work in a fast-paced, multifaceted environment

  • Computer literate in Mac Platform; proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Google Applications

  • Capacity to be self-motivated

  • Access to a personal vehicle and clean driving record is required
